Philippines, Magellan's Cross, Cebu City, Visayas. Ferdinand Magellan, the first European explorer to arrive in the Philippines, arrived in Cebu, in 1521. He ordered his Portuguese and Spanish crew to plant this cross. King Philip of Spain later, in 1565, named Cebu as the capital of the Spanish colony.
